Information about the Division

Bope Poddala Divisional Secretariat is one of the nineteen Divisional Secretariats in the Galle District of the Southern Province. This division which covers 2% (2%) of the land area of the district covers an area of 35.6 sq. Km and covers an area of 3,560 hectares.

Bope Poddala Divisional Secretariat which belongs to the western part of Akmeemana Electorate is divided into North and North East Baddegama Divisional Secretariat and Gin Ganga, East and South East to Akmeemana Divisional Secretariat and Galle four Gravets  Divisional Secretariats to the south and west.

North latitudes 6-3 to 5-7 and eastern longitudes 80-11-15. This part of the country has a climatic characteristics of the southwestern lowlands with a temperature of 27.71 degrees Celsius and the southwest monsoon receives more rainfall.

Bope Poddala Divisional Secretariat is the main administrative center of this division which consists of forty four Grama Niladhari Divisions. Labuduwa Government Farm, Open University, Siridhamma College, Labuduwa Advanced Technological Institute, College of Agriculture, Agrarian Services Center, Coconut Development Board, Faculty of Engineering, Ruhuna Medical Faculty, Ruhuna (Private) Hospital, Ministry of Southern Province, Ministry of Government Complex Many important institutions such as the Department of Minor Export Agriculture are located in this division. The Galle Main Maternity Hospital is also under construction in this division

Most of the land in this division is used for agriculture while focusing on agriculture and other crops. In addition, paddy, coconut, rubber, vegetables and fruits as well as minor export crops are cultivated.

In 2018, the female population will be more than 54377 total population. It is 28337. (52.11%) Male population was reported as 26040 (48.89%). According to the 2018 statistics, the population of the division is 1527 per square kilometer.

There are 14 schools and 19 Dhamma schools and 36 Early Childhood Development Centers in the division for imparting wisdom to the children.

There are people working in the public and private sector as well as people who are self-employed in various fields such as masonry, carpentry, electrical, carving, carpentry, wood carving etc. as professional occupations

The Divisional Secretariat, which acts as the regional agent for the role of the government, is the pioneer in the task of fulfilling every need of a citizen from birth to death. In carrying out this function, a Class I officer of the Sri Lanka Administrative Service will serve as the Divisional Secretary, a Class III officer of the same service will be the Assistant Divisional Secretary, and an officer of the Sri Lanka Accounting Service will be the Accountant of the Sri Lanka Planning Planning and Planning Services. ) The total staff of the Bope Poddala Divisional Secretariat is two hundred and ninety six, including an Administrative Officer for Institutional and Administrative Affairs and an Administrative Grama Niladhari for Grama Niladhari Administration.

Evolution of the Institute

The office of the four Gravets Divisional Revenue Officers (DROs) in Galle was divided into two parts in 1974 as Bope Poddala and Akmeemana for ease of service. The Bope Poddala Assistant Government Agent's Office, comprising of 44 Grama Niladhari Divisions, was established in a house owned by Mr. HW Amarasuriya, a philanthropist in the area at the time. Wijayananda Ellawala, a retired Secretary to the Ministry who had served in the Civil Service for a long time, was the Assistant Government Agent.
